Industry Observation

The day’s most important management issue is the proposed foreign-exchange adjustment. Category A tourism businesses can currently choose between USD 500 per tourist and 20% of foreign-currency revenue. The proposal would remove the first option and require designated local bank accounts and corresponding POS routing. Although it remains proposed, it warrants new calculations of Rufiyaa expenditure, dollar debt, taxes and channel settlement. Travel companies should not assume that room rates must change; they should lock currency, taxes and payment terms into written quotations.

1. MMA proposes a uniform foreign-exchange conversion ratio for resorts

Hotelier Maldives reported on 11 August that the Maldives Monetary Authority plans to amend the Foreign Exchange Act, remove the USD 500-per-tourist option for Category A tourism businesses and require resorts to convert 20% of foreign-currency revenue. The proposal would also require a designated account at a Maldives bank, deposit of foreign-currency earnings into that account and POS terminals routing funds to local bank accounts. Guesthouses and safari vessels would retain their 20% revenue rule. The adjustment is proposed and the page gives no effective date.

2. Four Centara properties create six-month internship and one-year apprenticeship pathways

Hotelier Maldives reported on 11 August that Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, Centara Machchafushi, Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives and Centara Rasfushi partnered with the World Bank-funded SAILS Project under the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology. An open day will run from 14:00 to 17:00 on 23 August at Villa College Hall in Malé. The six-month internship and one-year apprenticeship cover culinary, food and beverage service, front office and housekeeping, for candidates who completed O’Level or are at least 16 and have basic English.

3. Visit Maldives brings in Ooredoo for World Travel Awards delivery

Visit Maldives Corporation and Ooredoo Maldives announced on 12 August that Ooredoo is the Official Digital Partner of the World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania & Indian Ocean 2026 gala. Their leaders signed the agreement to support preparation and digital connectivity for the Maldives-hosted event. The partnership strengthens event delivery resources but does not change any award result.

Dolphin View: Award communications must separate event partners, nominees and winners. For MICE clients, local connectivity support is an execution signal; network, venue and guest rights still need individual confirmation.

4. Atmosphere Kanifushi schedules BOTTEGA Gala Gold for 12–14 November

Hotelier Maldives reported on 12 August that Atmosphere Kanifushi will again stage the three-day BOTTEGA Gala Gold with Italian winery Bottega S.p.A. Two JUST VEG pairing dinners and the PIER SIX event require advance reservations because seats are limited, while the 14 November SPICE gala is open to all in-house guests. The resort says the experiences are within the Kanifushi Plan, with Bottega wines and Prosecco also available year-round under the plan.

Dolphin View: Lock stays to the three-day window but separately confirm limited dining, the all-guest gala and year-round beverage inclusions. Check age rules, dietary needs, reservation deadlines, taxes and alcohol policy rather than describing everything simply as free all-inclusive content.

5. ELE|NA launches three ReFine body treatments

Hotelier Maldives reported on 12 August that ELE|NA launched the ReFine Body Collection: Sculpt & Smooth combines exfoliation with contouring massage; Firming Flow uses a warm Maldivian sand poultice followed by firming work; and Lymphatic Lightness combines dry brushing with light-pressure drainage. At OBLU Select at Sangeli, treatments can be paired with ice bath and steam facilities. Public information does not list durations, prices or default inclusions.

6. SO Maldives adds a poolside ice-cream trolley

Hotelier Maldives reported on 12 August that SO Maldives introduced the Scooper Ice Cream Trolley beside the Lazuli Beach Club pool, offering ten flavours without requiring guests to leave the poolside area. The service is live, but the page does not publish daily hours, pricing, meal-plan inclusion or allergen details.

Dolphin View: This is a useful light-touch family and social-content selling point, but it does not justify promises of all-day, complimentary or fixed-flavour service. Confirm hours, children’s and allergen guidance, meal-plan rights and bad-weather arrangements.

7. Four Seasons Kuda Huraa confirms Victor Bernardo for September surf trophy

Four Seasons Kuda Huraa confirmed on 12 August that Brazilian freesurfer Victor Bernardo will join Mason Ho in the Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy from 4–11 September 2026. Six invited surfers compete at Sultans in single-fin, twin-fin and thruster divisions; more competitors are still to be announced. The break is a few minutes by boat from the resort.

8. Dusit D2 Feydhoo Maldives honours crew who rescued eight seafarers

Hotelier Maldives reported on 11 August that Dusit D2 Feydhoo Maldives honoured three Smart Own team members. On 31 July, the KV2 crew searched for hours in difficult weather and sea conditions near Gaafaru and rescued eight seafarers around a capsized vessel. Three people remained missing after the subsequent incident and search efforts continued. The resort presented certificates and condolences.

Dolphin View: Marine supply and passenger transfers both require licensed operators, communications, lifesaving equipment, manifests and emergency procedures. Do not use the rescue to create fear; place weather cancellation, delay contacts and alternative accommodation in pre-departure notes.

9. Bank of Maldives completes seven employee-led community projects

Bank of Maldives announced on 12 August that it completed seven employee-led projects under its Community Impact Grant, working with schools, councils, community organisations and NGOs on education and the environment. The programme began in 2025 for BML Islamic’s tenth anniversary and turns staff participation into community and environmental action; the public summary does not describe these projects as tourism products.

Dolphin View: A community project belongs in ESG communication only when location, partners, outcomes and maintenance can be verified. Travel companies should not package bank-funded work as a default visitor experience; ask first about compliant visits and local procurement.

10. Kandooma’s September ICEHOUSE music week is sold out

The official Visit Maldives event calendar says Kandooma will host an ICEHOUSE music week from 5–12 September, including two sunset beach concerts limited to 250 in-house guests and a fan Q&A with frontman Iva Davies. The official page explicitly marks the event sold out. It is therefore a case study in stay-date demand and content operations, not available concert inventory.
